Impacts of multiple pollutants on pollinator activity in road verges

چکیده
To tackle pollinator declines, there is a major need to increase the quantity of flower-rich habitats. Road verges offer one such opportunity but are exposed diverse forms pollution from roads and road traffic. We carried out broad initial assessment establish if how affects quality as foraging environments. assessed spatial distribution pollution, flowers pollinators in verges, then used field experiments simulate measure impacts four ubiquitous little studied (noise, turbulence, dust metals) on densities behaviour. found that were noise, metal which decreased with distance edge but, exception extended more than 8 m into verges. Pollinator lower closer edge—particularly within first 2 (55% at 7–9 m)—where greatest. This was despite similar density species richness flowers. Simulated turbulence deterred by causing intermittent disturbance (reducing visit duration up 54%), some taxa preferentially avoided concentrations metals frequently (resulting 75% fewer visits), while noise had no apparent effect. Synthesis applications. Pollinators many we roadside-realistic levels Although findings suggest largely suitable for conservation, management enhancements should prioritise areas edge, along relatively traffic densities.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IS A BALANCING ACT. ON ONE SIDE IS SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION OF food and biobased products for a growing population. On the other is protecting our natural resources and the environment. The global decline of the honey bee, a major domestic pollinator of many crops, exemplifi es how complex the factors are that contribute to maintaining this balance. Overall bee colony decl...

E conomists have been concerned about issues of overconfidence at least since Adam Smith (1776, Book I, Chapter X), who wrote in The Wealth of Nations: “The over-weening conceit which the greater part of men have of their own abilities, is an ancient evil remarked by the philosophers and moralists of all ages.” Titans of modern economics have had similar reactions to the “ancient evil.” Daniel ...

heteropoly acids (hpa) and their salts have advantages as catalysts which make them both economically and environmentally attractive, strong br?nsted acidity, exhibiting fast reversible multi-electron redox transformations under rather mild conditions, very high solubility in polar solvents, fairly high thermal stability in the solid states, and efficient oxidizing ability, so that they are imp...

CONTEXT Anthropogenic vectors enhance the natural dispersal capacity of plant seeds significantly in terms of quantity and distance. Human-mediated seed dispersal (i.e. anthropochory) greatly increases the dispersal of crop species across agroecosystems. In the case of oilseed rape (OSR), spillage of seeds from grain trailers during harvest has never been quantified. METHODS Our experimental ...
